Safe Handling of Medicines

The majority of children will have short-term medical needs at some point in their education, and some will require medicines on a regular basis.

Education and childcare professionals should be fully aware of their role in protecting the child's health, and able to provide help and support to parents where necessary.

Safe Handling of Medicines is an interactive eLearning course for employers and employees who need to safely handle, and administer, children’s medicines.

The course includes the following chapters:

  • Your Responsibilities – Guidance on how Employers, Head Teachers, Managers and other staff can all have different roles in the managing and administration of medicines.

  • Medicines – Information on what medicines are acceptable to administer in childcare settings and under what circumstances.

  • Dealing with Medicines Safely - Understand the importance of storing medicines correctly and which ones may need to be carried by children.  This chapter includes the disposal of expired and unused medicines.

  • Long Term Medical Needs – Guidance on how to support a child with long-term medical needs. You will also learn about the importance of a health care plan, what details should be included in it, and who should get involved. This chapter also looks at self-management, educational visits, and emergency procedures.

  • Common Conditions - Asthma, epilepsy, diabetes, and anaphylaxis are common medical conditions amongst children, this chapter explores these conditions and how to deal with them.

  • Assessment - With a printable certificate upon completion (90% pass rate).
